The Gun Debate. Again.

Never Again © Patrice Herbst 2018.jpg

I WILL PREFECE MY WRITING BY SAYING THIS BLOG IS NOT ABOUT POLITICS.

706.  It is about 706 children, students, workers.  Police officers, custodians, care givers.  Shoppers, military personnel, theater-goers.  Native American, African American, Caucasian, Asian, Latino. Republican, democrat, independent, liberal, conservative, rich, poor.  It’s about safety in big malls, little malls, big-box stores, the post office.  Schools and school yards, temples, churches, concerts, cafe’s. Homes, apartments, rural or urban, airports, restaurants, spas, workplace  or sometimes just “other.”   It’s about obtained legally, illegally, stolen or gifted.

These categories above and the list below have just one common denominator.  An assault weapon or altered semi-automatic or automatic weapon was used to cause mass carnage and death, in the most innocent of places to the most trusting of people.  Places we should all feel safe.  The weapon does not discriminate, it crosses all peoples, religions, political preference and occupation.  There is no one path to obtaining it, but many.

So when I hear people feel their second amendment rights are threatened by banning these types of assault weapons, and modified weaponry, I ask why they need to own this type of weapon in the first place?  My understanding is for protection, target practice, and fun.  For the sake of the Second Amendment.  Really?

To that I say B.S.!  Our forefathers protected themselves with a rifle, a handgun and good marksmanship.  I feel sure had they known when they wrote that amendment, that the day would come when legislators no longer thought with common sense but by the money that backed them, that the innocence of youth would be lost in schools all over our nation, they would have written it differently.

Would you feel differently if one of those 706 victims were your son, daughter, wife, husband, loved one?  Would you feel differently if the weapon you possess for fun was stolen and used to cause a massacre?  Sure, some gunowners are responsible and lock their weapons up in a decent safe, with a combination known only to them.

But many lethal weapons are in the darkest reaches of a closet, a dresser, under a bed, rafters in the basement, or heating ducts, waiting to fall into the wrong hands.

Hand guns kill.  Horrific enough.

Assault weapons and altered weaponry kill masses.  Fast.  Brutal.  Carnage.

And that is the simple difference.

To our legislators, government and president, assault weapons and modified weaponry  DO NOT BELONG IN PUBLIC HANDS.

They belong in the hands of trained S.W.A.T. teams, police departments and related government institutions.

To our legislators, government representatives, president, and candidates in the future, consider yourself ON NOTICE.  You will NOT GET MY VOTE if you are not backing a ban of assault weapons, modified weaponry from the reaches of the public.

You will NOT GET MY VOTE if the over-reaching NRA “buys into your campaign.”  I do not see anywhere within the mission statement of the NRA that they are here to buy political persuasion.  Yet, they do.

It has to stop, and be brought under control.  The buck stops with YOU.  The bullets stopped with these people:
